Pro tips to help you make a pick

Tickets at the Vatican Museums cost €25 at the door, while online tickets start at €34. The extra fee online is worthwhile, as it saves you from waiting 1-3 hours in the on-site ticket line. Note that even with online tickets, you’ll still go through redemption and security lines.

Vatican tickets are in high demand and often sell out quickly. To secure your visit, it’s best to book tickets 3-4 weeks ahead for peak seasons, or at least a week early during the off-season.

For a truly seamless entry, consider a hosted entry. This option lets you skip the redemption queue as your host meets you with validated tickets, so you’re ready to enter at your scheduled time.

A guided tour at the Vatican can greatly enrich your experience, offering priority access and fascinating insights into the art and history within. For those who prefer flexibility, audio guides are an excellent alternative for exploring at your own pace.

While standard tours are more budget-friendly, small-group tours (up to 15 guests) allow for a more personal and interactive experience with the guide, perfect for those who want a closer look at the Vatican’s highlights.

For a quieter, cooler experience, opt for an early morning or after-hours Vatican tour. These times offer a peaceful setting to take in the art and architecture, though slots are limited, especially in summer—book at least two weeks in advance.

Many Vatican tickets don’t cover certain areas, such as the Necropolis, St. Peter’s Tomb, or Scavi. Be sure to review what’s included and excluded to avoid surprises.

The Vatican Gardens offer a serene space to unwind amid fountains, sculptures, and lush greenery—especially ideal for families and couples. Wheelchair-accessible, the Gardens are a lovely retreat after exploring the Vatican.

Did you know?

Of the over 70,000 artworks in the Vatican Museums' vast collection, only about 20,000 are exhibited to the public. The remaining pieces are hidden away, safeguarded for preservation, space constraints, and ongoing expert research, making them an unseen treasure trove of art history.

To protect Michelangelo's iconic frescoes from the 25,000 daily visitors, the Sistine Chapel boasts a state-of-the-art climate control system, installed in 2014. This modern marvel replaced the 1990s system, ensuring optimal preservation against humidity and dust with minimal noise and air disturbance.

The Vatican Museums' Gallery of Maps, a 120-meter-long frescoed masterpiece completed in 1583, showcases 40 detailed maps of Italy by Ignazio Danti. These maps, exceptional for their time, predate modern cartography by centuries and display remarkable geographical accuracy.

Giuseppe Momo's Spiral Staircase in the Vatican Museums, designed in 1932, is an architectural marvel. Its unique structure allows for separate ascending and descending paths without intersection, predating the discovery of DNA's double helix by over two decades.

The Sala Rotonda of the Vatican Museums echoes the Pantheon with its grand circular design and soaring coffered ceiling. At its heart stands a colossal bronze Hercules, and beneath lies Nero's massive porphyry basin, while above, an oculus opens to the sky, symbolizing both architectural brilliance and historical depth.

Why visit Vatican Museums?

Home to 4,000 Renaissance masterpieces

Hosting over 4,000 Renaissance works, the Vatican Museums are a focal point for admirers of this era. Key highlights include Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, a marvel with its ceiling and The Last Judgment, and the Raphael Rooms, showcasing Raphael's mastery in fresco.

Journey through 3,000 years of history

The collections encompass works from ancient civilizations to contemporary art. This includes artifacts from ancient Egypt, which date back to around 3000 BCE, and extends through the classical periods of Greek and Roman history, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and up to the modern era, offering a unique opportunity to see the evolution of art and culture across these vast stretches of human history in one location.

Over 15,000 pieces of modern religious art

Beyond Renaissance art, the Vatican Museums boast diverse collections including statues in the Pio-Clementino Museum to the modern religious art in the Collection of Contemporary Art. This diversity allows visitors to experience a wide spectrum of art, spanning different eras, cultures, and styles, making each visit uniquely enriching and educational.

Showcases nearly 400 years of architectural evolution

The Vatican Museums are not just art galleries but architectural masterpieces. The original Bramante Staircase, built in the early 16th century, is a marvel of Renaissance engineering. In contrast, Giuseppe Momo's Spiral Staircase, constructed in 1932, is a modern interpretation, showcasing showcase architectural evolution through four centuries.

Explore the smallest country in the world Vatican City

Venture beyond the museums to the Vatican Gardens, spanning 23 hectares with over 200 fountains and numerous sculptures, reflecting centuries of papal influence. St. Peter's Basilica, a cornerstone of Christian architecture, encompasses over 15,000 square meters and houses masterpieces like Michelangelo's Pietà and Bernini's Baldachin, drawing millions of visitors annually.

The service from the staff who helped me at the office was excellent—they were super friendly and attentive—and the tour was great, but I do want to emphasize that if you want to enjoy a more peaceful experience at the Vatican, I highly recommend booking well in advance because it gets very crowded by midday. I highly recommend booking through this site—it’s very well managed.

I loved the tour. Meeting point very close to Vatican, and very well organised. Group size was excellent, just 10 of us and the tour was amazing. Our tour guide, Karen, was amazing. We visited the square, the dome, the tombs and of course the Basilica. She provided so much useful information and insights. A good mix or history, religion, architecture and she was great with the kids. After this tour,I would definitely recommend them. My top advice, is book for the early tour, avoid the crowds and the heat. We went at 8.30.

We had booked a guided tour (in German). We started the tour on time and were part of a small group. The tour was very informative and engaging. Photos and videos weren’t allowed, but that didn’t matter—it meant we could give the tour guide our full attention. We really enjoyed it and highly recommend the tour.
